SPEAKER AT THE UNIVERSITY CYPRUS
Lecture on the subject “Language and International Understanding”
The English Speaking Union Cyprus and the University of Cyprus present a
lecture by Lord Alan Watson of Richmond on the subject Language and
International Understanding - World comprehension via the English language.
The lecture will take place on Monday 22 March 2010, 7.30 pm, Lecture Room
B108, Committee Building, University of Cyprus Campus.
Professor Stavros A. Zenios, Dean of the University of Cyprus, will
introduce the lecture while the Chairman of the Organisation in Cyprus, Mr
Garo Keheyan, will present Lord Watson, the International Honorary Chairman
of the English-Speaking Union. The event will be honoured by the presence of
Mrs Elsie Christofia, Honorary President of the English-Speaking Union
Cyprus.
During the lecture, Lord Watson will stress the importance of the English
language and its contribution as an international language towards world
comprehension and the promotion of friendship, peace and respect to cultural
differences. Historical examples of communicational misunderstandings due to
the misuse and misapprehension of the English language will be exemplified.
Lord Alan Watson is Chairman of CTN Communications and was the European
Chairman of Burson Marsteller for more than ten years. He expertly advises
important international and British companies in their strategic
communication and he has been recently appointed Chairman of Advisory
Committee of Havas Media UK. He is also the non-executive Chairman of the
wine importer company Raisin Social, and Official Editor of Community Nexus.
Former member of the Liberal party, Lord Watson was rewarded in 1985 with
the CBE title (Governor of British Empire) and in 1999 was titled as a Lord.
He is a member of the Special Committee of European Affairs of Parliament of
Lords. After being Chairman of the English Speaking Union for six years, he
was promoted to the International Honorary Chairman of the organisation. In
2005 he was awarded the Churchill medal. He is Chairman of the Community
Council and member of the Executive Committee of Pilgrims. Additionally, he
co-presided the British Committee in Jamestown 1607-2007, and is a member of
Forum of Businessmen of Prince of Wales.
In the international scene he has served in the Executive Committee of
UNICEF Britain and was a member in the team of leaders of the European
Parliament for Romania. Lord Watson has been granted honorary benches both
in Britain and internationally. He has been granted honorary doctoral and
professorial titles from a number of British and international universities
such as Richmond, The American International University in London, where he
is also a member of the Academic Council of Governors. Finally he is
Chairman of the British Council of Certifications.
Lord Watson is author to the following publications: “Europe at Risk”, “The
Germans: who are they now?”, “Thatcher & Kohl: Old Rivalries Revisited” and
“Jamestown: The Voyage of English”.
